Sherman Oaks Residence
This existing 2,400 square foot house was a split level that had a dated stucco finish throughout.
The entry, tucked into the corner where the two buildings met, was very uninviting.
The design intention was to articulate the two different massings. The owner also wanted to open up the living and dining room with large sliding glass doors to the newly designed backyard pool, wood deck and garden. We used wood siding to articulate the two story structure and a sand finish stucco for the one story structure. A long wood trellis invites visitors to traverse pavers thru the new garden, to reach the front door. Stacking the sliding glass doors to the backyard required extending the single story section of the house, which assisted in terminating the two different exterior finishes. The new wood plank pool deck was designed to float above a gravel bed and surround the crisp new rectangular pool. The required retaining wall is finished with stucco and painted to complement the hillside landscaping beyond. The custom formed and stained landscape pavers at the front and backyards combine with gravel inserts to relate to the color of the pool deck.
